How to play Warhead Junction

I just wanted to ask a quick question in relation to this new patch. While the addition of Warhead Junction didn't shock me, as it felt like they were moving in the direction of making it a normal, all-modes map, it did come as a mild surprise that they did it so abruptly. Which brings me to ask, why do people hate this map so much? Being a bit more of a latecomer to the game, having started in late 2017, and more importantly, being a quick match-only player until early 2019, I lack perspective on the perceived issues in the removed maps within ranked/competitive play.
As an erstwhile Mephisto main, I know that I would get irritated every time Warhead came up because of its dispersed objective, which obviously puts Mephisto at a disadvantage, but I doubt that would be the whole issue people have with it, right? I'd love to hear your guys' perspective.

I'm looking to get back into HotS; I heard Garrett talking about the updates on another show and have kind of been in between games so I thought I'd jump back in with the big patch.
Based on the hero release history, I last played seriously in late 2018. I know there have been some significant overhauls to the game and I have loosely followed the big updates and the disappointing fall of eSports support by Blizzard. However, I thought I'd write in and ask: Any general or high-level advice for a returning player? Any characters that I MUST check out? Whitemane was the last character announcement I remember when I was still active. And lastly, is 'Heroes Hearth' the best place to catch HotS eSports action?
